Be a part of #GivingTuesdayNow, a new global day of giving and unity created by GivingTuesday as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.
GivingTuesday is encouraging the world to give back to their local and global communities and to support nonprofits during a time when supporting these organizations is more important than ever before.
Currently, Dorcas International is open and offering full services that have been modified to ensure social distancing and community care. We are committed to serving our clients, who are low income Rhode Islanders and newcomers (refugees and immigrants), especially during these unprecedented times.
Due to the pandemic, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of clients losing their jobs, and we are helping them file for unemployment claims. Many of our clients who are newcomers work in hospitality and food service jobs, which have been affected the most, and we are doing our best to help them navigate our state’s benefit systems.
However, many immigrants who are currently in dire need of financial help are not eligible for benefits, because they do not have long enough work histories to collect unemployment or due to other circumstances. In response to this situation, we have designated some basic needs funds to assist these families with housing assistance and other essential needs — and we are delivering needed food and household items to their homes.
We have also deployed Community Health Workers — who have been trained to provide culturally appropriate education and support to newcomers and guide them through the health and safety protocols — to provide updated information about COVID-19 in the languages that our clients speak.
Right now, your support and contributions mean everything. With your gift, we can assist families and individuals in our community who are struggling and desperately need our help during this tough time.
We hope you join the movement and show support on 5/5/20! Give today; change a life tomorrow!
